Today we gently open the door to our new tour base in Market Street, at the original entrance to the ancient monastic site of Kells.
Near our front door was the original standing place of the 9th century termon cross now known as the Market Cross, but originally known as the Cross of the Gate.
Not much is known about the welcome onto the sacred site of Kells, however outside the gate were the Canon Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem in what is now known as John Street.
One cannot help but imagine, however, that once one passed the Cross of the Gate, there would have been a welcoming building of some sort, for dusty and hopeful travellers to reveal their mission and be guided gently to their destination.
The Kells Experience adopt the mantle of hospitality, and of showing visitors to their destination with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of hospitality.
Daily guided tours will take place from here at 10:00 a.m. every morning, Monday to Saturday.
